Group B streptococcal haemolysin and pigment, a tale of twins

Group B streptococcus [(GBS or Streptococcus agalactiae)] is a leading cause of neonatal meningitis and septicaemia. Most clinical isolates express simultaneously a β-haemolysin/cytolysin and a red polyenic pigment, two phenotypic traits important for GBS identification in medical microbiology. The genetic determinants encoding the GBS haemolysin and pigment have been elucidated and the molecul...

Antibiotic susceptibility and biochemical properties of Streptococcus faecalis strains reacting with both D and G antisera.

Thirty one of 60 consecutive isolates of Streptococcus faecalis produced a reaction in both D and G streptococcal grouping sera. A close correlation was found between this grouping reaction and haemolysin production, resistance to erythromycin, tetracycline, and trimethoprim, and delayed fermentation of sorbitol.

Haemolysin test for characterization of immune ABO antibodies.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Antibodies with haemolytic properties are common within the ABO system. These lytic antibodies are immunoglobulin G (IgG) and in high titres cause haemolysis during blood transfusion. Information on Immunoglobulin types and concentration of ABO haemolysins in Indian population is lacking. The present study was undertaken to know the usefulness of haemolysin test for char...

Comparison of latex and haemolysin tests for determination of anti-streptolysin O (ASO) antibodies.

A latex agglutination test was compared with the micro-titration haemolysin inhibition method for the detection of anti-streptolysin O (ASO) antibodies in 428 serum samples. After slight modification of the latex method to produce maximal agglutination good agreement was shown between the results obtained by the two methods. The latex test had a sensitivity of 83.6%, a specificity of 93.3%, a p...

Serological tests in the differentiation of staphylococcal and tuberculous bone disease.

The haemagglutination test for antileucocidin is frequently positive in cases of bone tuberculosis in the absence of obvious staphylococcal infection. This test is therefore of little practical use in the differentiation of staphylococcal and tuberculous bone disease, and its use has been discontinued at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. The antigamma haemolysin test in bone tuberculosis...
